FOLLOW THE EMIGRANT TO THE NEIGHBOURING COUNTRY |
|
Traditionally, projects within migration research have stayed within national borders of a single country, thus cooperation across the border will generate new opportunities. Until today historical sources have been difficult to link, a problem which project Crossing Borders hopes to solve. As an example it will be possible to follow Swedish employment immigrants to Norway and back. Linking the collected historical data will simplify the search for ancestors on both sides of the border. At the same time a regional perspective will reveal new possibilities within research and interpretation.
FIND YOUR ROOTS IN A SWEDISH-NORWEGIAN MIGRATION DATABASEThe Swedish American Center in Karlstad and the Norwegian Emigrant Museum in Stange will cooperate in order to create a Swedish-Norwegian network on migration movement. We will collect data from a variety of sources about immigrants and emigrants and register this information in a joint database, which is to be available to the public. Our goal is to provide researchers with a nuanced picture of the streams of emigration from the border regions of our two countries, both that which flowed across our common border and that which left for other shores. |
WEB BASED TOOLS MAKE THIS POSSIBLE |
|
The joint database will eventually be available on the Internet. Using a web based tool makes it possible to continuously update the database and make it possible for people to follow the development of the project and immediately see what new material have been registered. We will assemble information from various sources to give a nuanced pictures of the migrants..
